Emerald Textiles - State of the Art Commercial Laundry

Emerald Textiles is a recent build-to-suit project completed by Western State Design (WSD). The new state-of-the-art facility incorporates the latest technology, equipment, and infrastructure. Emerald selected WSD to design and build the new commercial laundry within an existing 110,000 square-foot facility in San Diego. Emerald and WSD jointly planned the laundry to maximize all efficiencies of operation. The new plant was built on schedule and on budget.

Water & Energy Saving Laundry Equipment

The laundry equipment, which was furnished and installed by WSD, is the latest and most energy efficient equipment that exists. The equipment includes Milnor's PulseFlow® Technology - awarded the 2010 Certificate of Innovative Technology from the prestigious Hohenstein Institute, confirming that a PulseFlow tunnel can effectively wash light to medium soil in 0.3-0.45 gallons/lb. of fresh water and meet the Title 22 compliance standards in California. The resulting water conservation and energy efficiency will save an estimated 40 million gallons of water annually.

Greater Efficiency & Ergonomics

The new laundry is the most automated and technologically advanced health care linen laundering facility in the United States. It allows for fewer manual processes and greater automation through computerized systems, automated conveyors, overhead rail system and machines. Emerald's specific gravity-enabled design and automation prevents unnecessary strain, employee safety risks and saves time with streamlined, computer-driven processes.

Award-Winning Design

Emerald Textiles recently won the Savings by Design award for the advanced energy and water saving management system featured in the plant design. The prestigious award is sponsored by the California Public Utilities Commission and San Diego Gas & Electric. With their award-winning Milnor continuous batch washers, press, dryers and boilers, Emerald saves tremendous amounts of natural gas every day. The technology used to heat water for the plant is cutting edge and throughout the plant they use the most energy efficient lighting available resulting in further energy savings. Everything about Emerald's facility was designed with the environment in mind and utilizes the latest technology, re-use principles and energy efficiencies.

As the San Diego Business Journal recently noted, "What may be even more impressive is Emerald's logistics system for receiving, sorting, washing and delivering the laundry. The bed linens, blankets, and scrubs are moved along through the various stages of cleaning using huge duffel bags hung from an overhead monorail made by E-Tech of Minnesota. The hanging bags that move along the rail system eliminate workers having to pick the bags up and reduces the number of back injuries commonly experienced at industrial laundries."
